Well we played a Monday night show last night at Normal Street Bar. I try to keep this Blog positive but there isn't much positive to say about that place. Well, the bartenders were cute and the staff was nice enough - but for a music venue it's kind of lousy. The room isn't set up right for it, the PA is positioned really oddly, and its really impossible for a full band to sound decent in there. On top of that the gig doesn't pay and no one is there to see music, so even if you have merch, nobody's buying.
Still, a few friends of ours showed up and they gave us some drink tickets that we spent on tall cans of Busch beer. Nothing Left opened the show - though couldn't manage to bring along any of their own gear. No big deal for a bass player, but for a drummer that can kind of get dicey. Every drummer has their own set-up that they play with, so the idea that you can just hop on another drummer's kit is sort of flawed. Aside from that, bands should just be able to get their gear to a show. Otherwise I'm not confident you're really a band. Whatevs.
As for ourselves we didn't play our best, but we are getting our sound worked out. With Zeke the designated electric guitar player he has the opportunity to really work out his sound - as opposed to Cody and I switching off and playing with totally different settings. I'm liking the configuration. Also, Zeke is liking the vintage stripped down Fender sound and I think that keeps our volume a little more under control.
So it was fine, not a great gig by any stretch of the imagination, and not a gig I would likely take again. But we did it, and it's done.
